Melted Snow

tentatively she closed her eyes

and allowed the stranger to approach her

she wondered if she would run –

wondered what she would feel –

IF she would feel.

she steeled herself,

waiting,

and then…

nothing.

ice.

emptiness.

nothing more.

it had been quite a long time.

she thought for sure

she would feel something…some…

warmth…

excitement…

interest.

but there was none.

zip.

nada.

she wanted to turn away

push the stranger aside

and go back inside

where it was safe

but a lifetime of guilt held her in place

made her allow the stranger

to have his way for showing her

how empty she really is.

later she cried.

thank goodness

the stranger was gone –

and she was left alone

again –

but at least now she knows

what to avoid.

she no longer wonders,

now knows she is

the melted snow…

cold.

formless.

a puddle in which

passersby step quickly

before hurrying on their way.
